History and Heritage
McLean's history is rich and deeply intertwined with the development of the greater
Washington D.C. area. The community received its name from John Roll McLean, a
former publisher and owner of The Washington Post. In 1902, McLean, along with
Stephen Benton Elkins and Jean-Pierre Guenard, purchased the charter for the Great
Falls and Old Dominion Railroad.
